At National Chiao Tung University, Hsinchu, 29 October, 2011
When I heard the forum, I was really excited because I knew MINT would bring something special to the audience. On the other side, MINT was created not for a long time. It’s an honor that we would assist and be invited the activity. We needed to hold meetings to understand the information about important participators which includes moderators, speakers, and other clubs. Besides, we understood what the aim of the activity and how to assist the game: International Volunteer Garden. By the way, we needed to make posters, do handmade stuff, prepare DV and uniforms.
Early morning, everybody got up and arrived at 8:30 a.m. at Hall, Library, NCTU. We listened Joy Tang talked international volunteer project often make 10 mistakes. Who is the subject of the programs- educators, local cooperator, student or target group? Then, she mentioned “Faux Pas” this French word, it means “false step” It indicates that Taiwan education only gives student answer makes people lack of learning motivation. But, recent years, self-directed learning is a trend. It makes me think of my Foreign Language Department, Chung Hua University also has self-directed English class which matches what speaker says- don’t give a fish, teach how to fish. Another mention- don’t be a clique. Don’t just stay in self group. Service others is the aim! International volunteers live together every day, maybe forget that we should get more along with target group and understand what they need, because they are the reason that we exist. Third mention- don’t leave a mess. No matter we visit local area or make friends. Don’t leave trash or make local groups confuse about what’s the purpose of the collaboration. After this section, Arne Garvi stepped on the stage and explained the picture he created. At first, it appears a triangle. Triangle represents “role”, it has student, local cooperator, educator or target group, four triangles. Each top of the four triangles has glow spot that means when the different role gets inspiration, they are excited to teach their cooperator. Students and target group have a slash under the triangle that is switch of interesting, if the switch turn off, they don’t have interesting inside.
The purpose of this picture is that teacher usually gives student basic knowledge, not gives them how to use the knowledge to help others because the question is too wide, although teacher wants to give student internal and external developments. Another point is that school usually considers the two levels of student and educator. But, when it happens to international volunteer, it should be four levels, including local cooperator and target group. However, volunteers usually don’t think of that, they think about themselves.

Next is roundtable 1. It invited NCTU professor of Institute of Sociology Ding-Tzann Lii, NCTU I-DO Indonesia Volunteer Team, UST China-Gangsu Volunteer Team to give speeches. I was impressed by the professor. He said one area question connects the world issues. Hsinchu wetland, rivers, farms are all polluted. The river is polluted by waste water. Land has no nutrition, fish has no food, so they died, the food chain break. It results local fishery and farm industry poor yield. On economy side, no local production, no local consumption, no Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises. On culture side, no natural resource, no local culture, no world tourism. So that’s why one area problem connects the world issue. I deeply signed, because it’s not one area, it’s lots of area problems. If you want to know more, please link below:

Afterward, NCTU I-DO Indonesia Volunteer Team gave a speech. Their content almost same as what I’ve reported to MINT. Following is UST China-Gangsu Volunteer Team spoke of their China school camps. I feel the rule of China is hard. The teachers kick and punch wrong students. Beneath urban, it’s uncertain that they will attend university if they study hard. If one student of the town attends university, it brings honor to their ancestors. On the contrary, Taiwan the ways of education and rule, we might think school is boring, don’t know why attending school. On their final day, children didn’t want them to leave. I watched and cried. I was really touched.
Roundtable 2 invited NCTU Jullay India Volunteer Team and NYMU India Medical Volunteer Team. Jullay India Volunteer Team is created this year, same with MINT. They lacked of enough preparation, but their reflection report was round, the basic information was same as what I’ve reported to MINT. NYMU India Medical Volunteer Team, their report was quite detail, but no story, then the roundtable 2 dismissed.
We were busy at noon, because MINT decorated the hall. We were looking forward to afternoon coming. The hall divided into six pieces, so students should divide into six groups. Each group has 20 persons. When they finished their part of one color, they would go to front white table. Looking and asking some questions, then they could go to the next colored part. The purpose of the game design hopes volunteers can observe on different perspectives, such as educators, project, students, and target group. Thought about what target group needs to improve on health, culture, ecology, governance, economy and education, then, wrote it down on post-it. Following is the way of decoration.
In process, MINT was an assistant. I stood there and like to see the participators were willing to use English or drawing to expression, but I didn’t see what they wrote. Just in case, somebody needed a help. After the game over, we cleaned away the decoration, the participators sat down and listened ADOC Secretariat Stanley Wang, NCTU E-Mate Indonesia Volunteer Team, NTU Malaysia Volunteer Team, and CHU MINT Indonesia Volunteer Team introduction. E-Mate Indonesia Volunteer Team introduced almost same as we’ve reported. This is the second time that we heard Malaysia Volunteer Team gave the speech, but the content simplified. MINT Indonesia Volunteer Team, small Bella and Robert talked much about the organic farming and held great composure on stage. As to the detail content, come to link our blog: http://chuivg.blogspot.com/
After, ADOC Secretariat Stanley Wang gave a speech. In fact, we knew the content because we heard many times.
At that time, I was afraid because I wanted to talk about what I think of Collaboration Dynamics. So at 3:50, I raised my hand up.
I said, I remember when I was young, I’ve learned four elements of human existence-sunshine, air, water, soil at natural science class. We get it anywhere. we don’t think how much is the price. But, do we think how much value it is. If they are polluted so that we can’t live, plants and animals can’t survive. How can we improve the situation. Here, I want to tell a story. A little talented and arrogant monk, he complains to his master that no brothers want to cut woods with him. He asks the master if he can accompany him. His master gives him a naked sickle without the hilt. He says if the little monk can cut down woods, he will go with him. The little monk says I can’t because when I cut woods, my hand will get hurt. The little monk metaphors the naked sickle, very capable, but without his brothers, he can’t do many things. I mean in the real world, international organizations are like the naked sickle, without international volunteers and some cooperation, they can’t achieve great dreams. Why we should be international volunteers? If we’ve never joined personally, how can we help next generation. In fact, that time, I want to say Taiwanese narrows the international relationship by ourselves. Honestly, my friends and I seldom care about the world issues, until I participate the international volunteer activity. I realize the world is vast. So now, we should put us in target group’s shoes, try to understand their values. In the end, I want to tell how a goal can be successful. We should follow the answer directly. Don’t keep finding questions. If you keep finding questions, you will get more and more questions. We should think how to achieve the goal, then, we can go forward. The purpose of writing blog for us is that makes the whole world know what the volunteers have done in those countries, so we are supposed to write English version. It will help a lot, thank you.
Finally, NCTU Service Learning Center Director Chi-Kaung Pai made a perfect ending for the perfect day.
